 A Rooster's Crow

When I was in kindergarten, my teacher used a light bulb to hatch a chick from an egg for me. I brought the baby chick home. In a year or so, it grew into a big handsome rooster. I name it “Kay-Mart-Key” for no apparent reason. I love to watch it walking around in my backyard. I enjoyed it very much until it suddenly disappeared one day. My dad told me that it crew too loud in the early morning and became bothersome to our neighbors. So, Dad sent it away and I did not know where it had gone.

The Rooster is known as the “strutting peacock” of the Chinese Zodiac! It symbolizes the characters of being resourceful, practical, analytical, honest, trustful, dependable, and supportive. Roosters also expect to be in control of their surroundings, and can bend over backward to please its loved ones.

I happen to live in the State of Delaware where the state bird is called “Blue Hen”. Now, don’t be fool by its name thinking that it is a female chicken that lays egg.  No, it is not. Rather, it is a fighting cock recruited in Kent County by Captain Jonathan Caldwell’s company during the Revolutionary War. This breed of famous Blue Hen “rooster” was noted for their fighting ability. Cock-fighting, now illegal in the United States, is a bloody and ruthless activity when two roosters are pitted against each other for sport. Often a rooster’s natural claw is fitted with sharp metal claw, or spur, to inflict damage on the opponent.

There is one rooster being mentioned in the Bible. Its trustful and dependable crow in the early morning, had made one of Jesus’ closest disciples, Peter, wept with broken heart.

It was at the Last Supper, after hearing Jesus telling his disciples that He would be arrested, Peter protested and an announced, “Lord, even if I had to die with you. I will never disown you.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

Sure enough, only a few hours later, in the middle of the courtyard near where Jesus was questioned by the high priest, Peter did exactly as the Lord had predicted. The rooster crew, and Peter went outside and wept bitterly.

So, for my “Kay-Mart-Kay”, the “Blue-Hen”, the “rooster at the courtyard”, may their faithful singing in the morning serve as a reminder for our loyalty to the Lord.
